Just before the WW2 I lived above my grandfather's umbrella shop at 67 High Street, and my father took me down as a 3-year-old to this place at the bottom of All Saint's Street. It was called Gallops ,and was a ships chandlers. In the window were huge models of all sorts of sailing boats.
There was also a man with a barrel organ, and a monkey on his shoulder, outside most times. The Good Old Days ! -
Have only just found your comment of over 2 years ago in response to Harry's Old Town Bingo Chris. I was fascinated to read it because your grandfather Lot was my grandfather's uncle. My grandfather was Sam Watford, better known as George who was son of Tom Watford, Lot's brother. I am busy writing finishing touches to my family history in the form of a trilogy, a copy of which which I hope will be lodged locally in Hastings in a few places in the next six months. It has taken me ten years to complete!

If Gill Joiner (formerly Watford) reads this, yes, you must be a distant cousin of mine ! It took you 2 years to notice my original comment, and it's taken me 5 years to come back to this site, so the chances of you reading this latest comment of mine will be pretty remote ! However if, by chance, you do read this whilst I'm still in one piece, do get in touch via my website www.severnmillnameplates.co.uk You are likely to be about the same age as my children- so don't leave it too long, or I may not be around !!! Keep washing your hands !
