Next to the Town Hall was Abbey National Building Society and at the other end was Fads Decorating Centre. This was knock down to make way for the Priory Meadow Shopping Centre.

Estimate date of photo perhaps late 1960s or early 70s based upon the design of the bus and absence of traffic.although there are double yellow lines and I don't think they were necessary before the 1970s
Front left looks as if it is the edge of M&S. FADS would not have been there before the 1980s. There was a large co-operative food shop on the right hand side past the Rumbelows, that may have in fact been what became FADS -
Yes the shop on the left was definitely Marks and Spencer and the bus in the distance was the first of the rear engine Atlantean Maidstone and District, they appeared around 1959/1960. We used to cycle behind these buses so close we would leave black tyre marks on the engine casing.

The row of shops on the right was Queen's Parade, and the supermarket to the right, originally, was Fine Fare. I remember the Parade being built, and then demolished.

I might be wrong but this looks like early 80s to me the car on the left looks like a mk3 escort.
